“Perth SupReme in a super struggle”

Perth blew away the Sorrento Gulls with three magnificent goals in the opening 36 minutes of their winner take all clash. A spot in the semi-final of the Football West Night Series was the prize for the winner of this Group A and Perth with a 4-2 win went through with Group leaders Western Knights.

Perth’s first three strikes by Todd Howarth, Marco Pelosi and Greg Sharland were exceptional in their execution and the supporters were treated to a tremendous match overall with both teams applauded from the field by all supporters.

With both teams at full strength the supporters attended in numbers to watch this deciding encounter. And an encounter it is to remember with six goals, near misses, a send off, a fight back, a change of referee, a non-send off and great football.

Sorrento’s Captain, Todd Harnwell won the toss of the coin for the first time this season in the 5th match and choose to attack the Lawley Street (northern) goal in perfect conditions considering the 8.30pm kick off. Two minutes in and the Gull’s Ciaran Hughes from 25 metre thumped a thunderbolt that clipped the cross bar as it went over.

Good work by Michael Black got himself into the Gulls penalty area and he passed back into David Onoforo who could only manage to steer the ball well wide of the left post from very close in on 5 minutes. After a bit of bouncing around Greg Sharland on the Perth right laid the ball back to Todd Howrath who from 35 plus metres unleashed a low level screamer that whistled pass Young’s left hand to go in just inside the right post to give the team in white a stunning 7th-minute home lead.

From the restart Todd Harnwell almost had Perth keeper, Jason Saldaris embarrassed, but Harnwell’s lob from near the half way line went just over the bar. Young bravely denied Onoforo, but there was nothing he could do on 14 minutes when Pelosi made best of a Daryl Platten stumble to race into the Gulls area to blast brilliantly at top pace into the top right corner making Perth supporters delirious. The Gulls didn’t show any signs of giving up and accepted that two top class goals had been scored against them. Glen Thomas blasted a half-volley well over from the edge of the box and then Steve McDonald had the ball in the net but the linesman’s flag ruled out the effort. On 21 minute Harnwell’s effort in getting to an under hit back pass seemed harshly ruled as dangerous when it seemed that Saldaris was a distant second in his attempt to get to the ball. Harnwell had passed to Cairan Hughes who had the ball in the net, but again the “goal’ was ruled out. The team in blue exerted some pressure with a series of corners, but the desired result was not achieved.

On 36 minutes a Perth attack was halted when Pelosi was brought down in front on the edge of the box by McDonald. Sharland had to wait a while until the referee was satisfied with the distance for the wall and then Sharland produced a perfect curler over the wall and into the very top right corner. Perth’s celebrations reached a new crescendo that didn’t dip as the Gulls lost possession from their restart and Onoforo sped into the Gull’s area where he was upended by Young who had raced out in an attempt to gain possession at Onoforo’s feet. Referee Kevin Taylor pointed to the spot and ordered Young off as he was rightly deemed last man. Gulls Coach, Steve Neville brought on substitute keeper Michael Lawson as Stuart Montgomery was sacrificed. Sharland took the penalty and fired it to Lawson’s right where it was successful. The Perth side was playing like Liverpool on steroids and the Gulls were at moments, spectators. The visitors did gain composure to a point where 2 minutes before the break they fashioned a chance that was for Hughes after receiving a Steve Porter lob, but his shot was battered away at the left post by Saldaris.

Coach Steve Neville made two early changes in the second half for the Gulls as Hughes and Platten were substituted for Garin Collins and Shaun Kilkelly respectively. Kilkelly was immediately in the action, as his well-struck effort from a corner was blocked. On 62 minutes there was another substitution as referee Taylor succumbed to a leg injury and Ross Sardi took the whistle. Six minutes later the 10 men had a goal. A cross from far left by Collins was met by Thomas whose header was over Saldaris and under the bar. The goal lifted the Gulls player to renew effort and cheered their supporters as honest endeavour was appreciated. On 73 minutes Thomas broke from midfield and put a well weighted pass to Harnwell who held off his marker before facing Saldaris in a one-on-one situation, where the Perth keeper deflected Harnwell’s effort with a leg. A minute later Harnwell raced onto a long ball speed into the area where he was brought down by Saldaris, referee Sardi had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, but surprisingly only showed Saldaris a yellow card when it seemed clear that he was ‘last man’. Despite the Gulls requesting a rethink by the referee Saldaris remained on the pitch. Stuart Banks confidently stroked the spot-kick into the bottom right corner to get the visitors within 2.

Perth’s coach, Graham Normanton or most likely his assistant’s verbal comments attracted the referee’s attention, but it was Normanton who was sent to the stands.

A minute later the Gulls were lamenting what could have been if Saldaris hadn’t remained on the pitch as he produced a fine diving save to his right to deflect a McDonald snap shot from inside the area after a good interchange of passes with Harnwell. Kilkelly’s long diagonal ball from the right was to Collins, but he volleyed too high. Pelosi and Harnwell were both cautioned as the intensity lifted another notch towards the finish. Phil Arnold wasted a wonderful chance to make sure of the points when he tried to be too clever by passing to no one when turned down the opportunity to shoot from 15 metres. Sorrento pushed to the end and created a couple of half-chances, but they didn’t get pass Saldaris

“SORRENTO SLIP”

The Sorrento Gulls deceived their supporters as they put in a poor performance against Western Knights who are now clearly the team to beat for the Football West’s 2009 Night Series. With both teams winning all three of their matches thus far, the clash was justly build as the match of the tournament. The Gulls failed to fire and again fell to the Knights as they did in the 2008 cup final. The Knights win the 2-0 win are now assured of an appearance in the semi-final, whilst Sorrento have to battle with Perth for the other spot from Group A.

Sorrento had Danny Cain & Michael Ord, whilst the Knights had Luka Jukic and Ivan Zuvela under suspension. The Knights won the toss of the coin by referee Ton Klaver and choose to kick towards the Britannia Road (northern) goal.

The first incident of note after a even midfield arm wrestle was on 11 minutes when Knights defender Aaron Bahadori ventured forward on the left & unleashed a left footer that Neil Young did well to block away for a corner. Brodie Martin came close for the Gulls on 19 minutes when he caught Frazer Siddall off his line with a lob that cleared the keeper, but also the crossbar, but only by inches. Seven minutes later, Bahadori played the ball into Daniel Trim but his low angled effort went across the face of goal.

On 30 minutes Todd Harnwell went down under a challenge from behind by Bahadori and the referee and linesman were in agreement with the awarding of a penalty for the Gulls. Steve McDonald stepped up to the spot, but his low penalty to the right lacked conviction and Siddall was able to save down to his left. A good opportunity wasted. Two minutes later Anthony Campbell flashed his low shot across the face of the Gulls goal from right to left. Then a further 3 minutes and the Knights did grab the lead. A low cross in from the right was completed missed by Daniel trim in his attempt to shot, but David Price was there to blasted low into the bottom left from 21 metres. The ball taking a slight deflection on its journey.

Sorrento had a chance to draw level 2 minutes before the break. Steve Porter linked up well down the right with Harnwell, but when the Gulls striker cut the ball back into the path of Porter, his low shoot for the bottom right was cleared off the line by Bahadori.

Two minutes into the 2nd half, Daryl Platten prevented the Gulls going further behind when his blocking tackle on David Micevski stopped the Knights driving force as he was about to pull the trigger. Then on 51 minutes the team in red did double their lead. Bahadori delivered a cross from the left, which created confusion at the far post and Campbell rose superbly to power a header past Young from seven metres.

With the Knights on top, Gulls Coach, Steve Neville introduced Garin Collins for James Morgan and then Lewis Flatt for Stuart Banks. But it was the Knights on the attack in the 61st minute when David Micevski created his own quick break and he was only denied by Young who tipped away with his left hand for a corner.

Campbell almost got his second of the night 2 minutes later, but Young got down at his near post and save the big striker’s flick. Knight’s Coac, Price replaced David Annall with George Tchami on 64 minutes. After 70 minutes Campbell headed over a David Micevski cross from the left. The introduction of Daniel Darras for his debut as he replaced Brodie Martin did bring a bit of life to the Gull’s challenge. Former Knight Stuart Montgomery blazed over from 14 metres after a Darras cut back. On 79 minutes Harnwell’s run on the right set up Porter, but he shot straight at Siddall who held. Six minutes later it was the Knights with a similar move as Price set up Tchami, but he shot directly to Young who held comfortably. In the closing 4 minutes, both sides seem to accept the score line, but of course it was the Knights who didn’t hide their celebrations after a big build up to the clash.

Sorrento’s next Football West match is against Perth on Friday, 27th February at Dorrien Gardens, Lawley Street, North Perth. Kick off is at 8.30pm. Early match at 6.30pm is Swan United v Western Knights.

“SORRENTO SEE OFF SWANS”

The Sorrento Gulls were solid in securing a victory against Swans United in their 2nd fixture of Football West’s 2009 Night Series at E & D Litis Stadium on the evening of Saturday, 7th February. The Gulls winning 3-0 with just a bit more firepower.

Both teams had slightly changed line ups from their opening matches last week. Stuart Banks failed a fitness test for the Gulls and thus Shaun Kilkelly came back into the team from suspension. The Swans gave a debut to Scottish midfielder Bryan McDonald. Swans won the toss of the coin by referee Paul Anderson and choose to kick towards the Britannia Road (northern) goal.

Both teams were guilty early of over elaborated passing and poor ball control, which lead to disjointed play. On 7 minutes there was a flicker of potential excitement with an appeal by several Gulls players for a penalty for hand ball as Todd Harnwell attempted to pitch the ball pass Paul Bazcynski. Referee Anderson paid no heed to the appeals and the imposing defender Bazcynski went forward with the ball for Swans. In the 9th minute, Swans had a great opportunity to take the lead. A free kick from the right was swung in by Andy O’Niell into the danger area where Tom Shepheard found space, but he volleyed over the right junction of crossbar and post as he slid in to make contact with the ball.

A long clearance by the Gulls defender Danny Cain on 13 minutes was chased by Ciaran Hughes and he won possession over Bazcynski and squared a pass into the path of Harnwell, but he pulled his shot wide of the left post. Five minutes later Hughes got down the Gull’s right and attempted a one-two with Leo Harman that was only thwarted by Swans keeper, Chris Ramsay smothering the return pass at the feet of Hughes. Swans were almost guilty of their own undoing on 21 minutes when a sequence of attempted headed clearances only dropped the ball to Harnwell, but again his effort was wide of the left post.

Cain was the only player cautioned on the night and justly occurred in the 27 minute for a late tackle on Shepheard right in front of the coach’s benches.

A minute later the Gulls took the lead with a slick move. Midfielder Glen Thomas struck a stunning curling pass out to Harnwell on the right who took the ball on a few strides before firing in a low cross that reached Leo Harman at the far post. Harman had time to control before slotting pass Ramsey from 8 metres to put the Gulls in front. Harman went so close to scoring his second on 40 minutes. Glen Thomas had taken a free kick that ended loose in the Swan’s area. Harman’s first attempt came back off the cross bar and his 2nd was cleared from the line by Trent Wood. Swans came back at the Gulls, but Ben Lees’s effort from distance was over Neil Young’s cross bar and then Matt Xerri shot from only slightly closer followed the same path.

The Swans solid defensive partnership of Bazcynski and Aaron Cole was broken for the 2nd half as Bazcynski was replaced due to a groin injury by Jake Da Re. The half was only 3 minutes old when Harman put the Gulls further in front. Steve Porter’s free kick from the right was headed on at the near post by Harnwell to Harman who stretched to head inside the left post.

Swans strived to get back into the match and through David Paone they almost had the avenue. Paone got pass two Gulls defender, but he fired straight to Young who held comfortably on 50minutes. One minute later Brendon Knox’s shot from a slight angle cannoned fully onto the right post and rebounded to safety for the Gulls. A move where the Gulls front three combined well to create a chance for Harman to score his hat trick ended when his lob of Ramsey cam back off the cross bar on 62 minutes. Harman was substituted very soon afterwards due to cramping, with Garin Collins joining the action. On 76 minutes Porter was tripped two metres outside the Swans area as he attempted to make inroads. Porter took an excellent free kick which Ramsey did well to keep out at the foot of the right post. The resultant corner from Ramsey’s save was taken by Thomas who passed to Porter and his cross was flicked in by Collin’s header. Collins taking 15 minutes to achieve his name on the scorers list.

The remaining 13 minutes contain no more serious goal mouth action despite further substitutions by coaches Steve Neville and Paul Lincoln of Sorrento and Swans respectively.

“SORRENTO GULLS GET GOOD START ”

Sorrento Gulls secured a victory against northern rivals, ECU Joondalup in the opening fixture of Football West’s 2009 Night Series at E & D Litis Stadium on the evening of Friday, 30 January. The Gulls winning 2-0 with just a bit more composure in the final third of the field.

The Gulls gave starting debuts to their new signings in Ciaran Hughes, Garin Collins & Daryl Platten as Michael Ord, Stuart Montgomery & Shaun Kilkelly being under match suspensions, which carried over from 2008.

An even opening period with neither keeper threatened unduly, but with plenty of activity as both set of players looked positive. The Gulls just shaded possession whereas ECU Joondalup had more attempts at goal, but all shoots were either wide of the target or comfortably handled by keepers, Neil Young and Bobson Korama of Sorrento & Joondalup respectively.

The last action of the half almost produced a goal for the team in white as McMurray got to a low cross from the left, but he poked onto the Sorrento cross bar and the rebound was cleared by the Gulls defense. Enough entertainment to keep the supporters eager for the 2nd half.

And so it was that the action continued after the break. Both coaches wouldn’t have been happy with the amount of loss of possession, but it made exciting expectation. As the half progress the Gulls seemingly were looking the more likely to score.

However, it wasn’t until the 68th minute that the game had its first goal and it came to the Gulls from an unexpected source. Joondalup’s central defender Scott Blackmore angled a strong pass back to his keeper, Bobson Korama. Korama miskicked his attempted first time clearance with the outside of his right foot causing the ball to travel directly to Ciaran Highes of the Gulls. Hughes from just inside the area promptly dispatched the ball into the unguarded net much to Korama’s embarrassment.

Five minutes later the Gulls doubled their lead. Danny Cain crossed high into the penalty area where Ciaran Hughes out jumped his marker to head down and across Korama. The ball struck the foot of the left post and rebound outwards to Gull’s Captain Todd Harnwell who fired truly pass Korama’s left to put the ball inside the right post.

On 84 minutes Coach, Steve Neville introduced 3 fresh players into the Gull’s line up to ensure the Gulls had momentum to secure the 3 points.

MAN OF THE MATCH:
